While
only the most puissant and powerful mages can summon shadows or elementals, even
the most common hedge wizard has enough power to summon a Hearth Spirit.
Hearth spirits, or more commonly called Domovoi, are tiny portions of the
Elemental Lords that can be summoned for small tasks, messages, and services. Domovoi can be summoned from any of the four elements, each
with specific abilities and limitations. All
Domovoi can speak and understand the primary language of the summoner, but
cannot speak any other languages. They
are not especially intelligent or crafty; they prefer simple assignments and
will often botch complicated jobs. They
can travel through their element extremely quickly, but must travel normally
through others.
Gnome
(Earth Domovoi)
Travels
through earth and rock at a speed of 20 miles per hour.
They can dig a 125 cubic foot area of dirt in a minute, or rock in an
hour. They are the strongest and
physically toughest of the Domovoi, but not especially quick.
Salamander
(Fire Domovoi)
They
can travel through fire, molten lava or metal at a speed of 25 miles per hour.
They can create small fires, feed larger fires, and can sense fire or
fire magic within ½ mile. They
cannot carry anything flammable or combustible.
They can deal small amounts of injury with their fire.
Sprite
(Air Domovoi)
Travels
through the air at a top speed of 30 miles per hour. The most versatile of messengers, the sprite is also the
weakest. Sprites are excellent at
aerial observation and long distance tracking.
Nixie
(Water Domovoi)
Travels
through water and other liquids at a top speed of 25 miles per hour.
They can travel to any depth, but items carried may not survive the
pressure and water damage. Nixies
cannot travel in any liquid greater than the boiling point of water such as lava
or molten steel.

This spell will summon and control one Domovoi for the duration of the spell. After the duration ends, the Domovoi will vanish. Summoning a Domovoi requires a portion of the appropriate element within range: a bucket of water, a large campfire, a patch of dirt, or a wide-open amount of air. Domovoi can be given simple commands and will perform those services as well as they are able. Observation, guarding, transporting messages, and creating distractions are all possible for the Domovoi.
